Hip Arthritis

Degeneration of the hip joint surface causing pain, stiffness and reduced mobility.

Overview

Hip arthritis is the gradual wearing away of the cartilage that covers the ball-and-socket surfaces of the hip joint. As the protective surface thins, movement can become painful and limited.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain in the groin, hip or thigh.
  • Stiffness, especially after rest.
  • Reduced range of movement.
  • Difficulty with walking or climbing stairs.

Possible Causes

Age-related wear-and-tear is the most common cause. Previous hip injuries, anatomy and genetic factors can also contribute.

Evaluation

Evaluation begins with a history and physical examination, supported by appropriate imaging such as X-rays.

Treatment Options

Management ranges from non-surgical care to surgical options such as hip replacement, depending on the severity and the individual patient.
