Hip Pain

Pain in the hip region with a range of possible underlying causes.

Overview

Hip pain is a common complaint that can arise from the hip joint itself or from the muscles, tendons, bursae and ligaments around it. Pain may also be referred from the lower back.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain in the groin, side of the hip or buttock.
  • Stiffness and reduced mobility.
  • Pain with weight-bearing or prolonged sitting.

Possible Causes

Causes include arthritis, bursitis, tendon problems, muscle strains and referred pain from the spine. A careful evaluation helps identify the source.

Evaluation

History and examination are key. Imaging may be arranged to clarify the diagnosis.

Treatment Options

Most causes of hip pain are managed non-surgically with activity modification, physiotherapy and appropriate medical care. Surgery is considered where indicated.
