Knee Pain

A common symptom with many possible causes — from soft-tissue strain to joint disease.

Overview

Knee pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints. It can arise from the joint itself, the surrounding ligaments and tendons, the cartilage, or from problems referred from elsewhere. Understanding where the pain comes from is the first step toward effective management.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain over the front, sides or back of the knee.
  • Swelling or a feeling of tightness.
  • Stiffness, clicking or catching sensations.
  • Difficulty with weight-bearing activities.

Possible Causes

Causes include soft-tissue strains and sprains, meniscus and ligament injuries, patellofemoral problems, arthritis, and overuse. A careful history and examination help identify the likely source.

Evaluation

Evaluation involves a detailed history and physical examination. X-rays or other imaging may be arranged depending on the findings.

Treatment Options

Many knee pain problems respond to non-surgical care such as activity modification, physiotherapy and pain management under medical supervision. Surgery is considered only when appropriate.
