Meniscus Injuries

Injuries to the shock-absorbing cartilage pads in the knee, common in twisting injuries.

Overview

The menisci are two crescent-shaped pads of cartilage in the knee that act as shock absorbers and help distribute load across the joint. They can be torn during twisting movements or with forceful impact.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain along the joint line.
  • Swelling, often developing gradually.
  • Locking or catching of the knee.
  • A sensation that the knee "gives way".

Possible Causes

Meniscus tears commonly result from twisting injuries, often during sport. They may also develop gradually as part of wear-and-tear changes.

Evaluation

Clinical examination and appropriate imaging help confirm the diagnosis and assess the pattern and extent of the injury.

Treatment Options

Management depends on the tear pattern, symptoms and the individual patient. Options range from non-surgical care to arthroscopic evaluation and treatment where appropriate.
