Rotator Cuff Problems

Conditions affecting the group of muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder.

Overview

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint and help stabilise and move it. Problems here are a frequent cause of shoulder pain and weakness.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain on the outer side of the shoulder.
  • Weakness with lifting or reaching.
  • Night pain.

Possible Causes

Rotator cuff problems include tendon inflammation, wear-and-tear, and tears resulting from injury or degeneration.

Evaluation

Clinical assessment and appropriate imaging help determine the nature and extent of the problem.

Treatment Options

Many cases respond to non-surgical care. In selected cases, arthroscopic evaluation and repair may be appropriate.
